British Mustard is a creative duo – Kai Cornwall self taught stylist, fashion designer born and raised in South East London and Ellen Critchley fashion and textiles designer, visual artist, who studied fashion design at Central Saint Martins College. Debut collection “Incipience” meaning gradually moving forward; the word was chosen as it links with their designs as in the mechanism behind life that always moves forward and you can never go back, similar to the British Mustard designs. Their goal and belief is set towards constant evolvement and growth.
Hidden icons throughout black history inspire the collection; each garment is like an archival piece of armour that museums forgot to show to the world. The collection is meant to take you through a journey of print, sleek textures and playful clothing, each piece is a dedication to a significant event, time or a person that helped fight for change and racial equality. The gender-neutral clothing sits beautifully on any form caressing the body and the deep rich colours are hard for the eye not to devour. Making new meaning for the phrase ‘a Fashion Education.’ This collection features mainly unisex clothing with few gendered garments, several wearable pieces and other more Avant-garde garments.
They have merged both natural patterns such as plant cells and blood vessels with the images of famous black icons, through this we have created strong textural patterns. British Mustard as a partnership are making art that is both provocative and political as well as informative and this is the aim of first collection “Incipience”.
